The wider curriculum

St Stephen's strongly believes in the importance of a broad and balanced curriculum to develop well-rounded pupils who are prepared for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life and that promotes their spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development.

A high quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.  Pupils are taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science.  Through building up a body of key foundational concepts, pupils are encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena.  They are also encouraged to understand how science can be used to explainwhat is occuring, predict how things will behave and analyse causes.

Art and Design

Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity.  A high quality art and design education will engage, inspire and challenge our pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.  As our pupils progress, they will be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design and how they have shaped our history and contributed to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Our high quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world.  The core of our computing is computer science, in which our pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work and how to put this knowledge to use through programming.  Computing will also enable our pupils to become digitally literate.

Geography at St Stephens will inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people.  Teaching will equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth's key physical and human processes.

Our pupils are given a high quality history education which will help them gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain's past and that of the wider world.  It will inspire pupils' curiosity to know more about the past.  Teaching will equip pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments and develop perspective and judgment.

Children at St Stephens learn French and are exposed termly to other languges from around the world.  This high quality language education fosters pupils' curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world.  It will also enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.  Additionally, it will provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes and learn new ways of thinking.  Language teaching will provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other places.

The music instruction engages and inspires pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.

The exceptional provision of physical education at St Stephens inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities.  It provides opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness.  Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities builds character and helps to embed values such as fairness and respect.
