What is Accelerate Reader?

Accelerated Reader is a computer program that helps teachers in Key Stage 2 manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. Your child picks a book at thier own level and reads it at their own pace. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer, which assesses their comprehension of the text. This gives both children and teachers feedback based on the quiz results which the teacher then uses to help your child set targets and direct ongoing reading practice.

Children using Acclerated Reader choose their own books to read from an assessed range designed to build on reading skills based on their individual needs. This makes reading a much more enjoyable experience as they can choose books that are interesting to them.

In most cases, children really enjoy taking the quizzes and as they are reading books at their reading and interest levels, they are likely to be successful. This is satisfying for most children. Best of all, they learn and grow at their own pace.

During the school day, children are given 20 minutes independent reading time to read their books. According to research, children who read at least 20 minutes a day, with a 90% comprehension rate (average percentage correct) on AR quizzes, see the greatest gains.            These books are also taken home each night for you to share with your child, which we recommend highly, or for them to complete more independent reading at home.

Accelerated Reader offers a wide range of literature, so if your child is reading a book at home, they can still take a quiz on it at school.  This will encourage a wider range of reading pusuits and help embed a love of reading.
