At St Stephen's, we follow a structured approach to the teaching of English. The table below summarises how we teach the different areas of English. Each is also explained in more depth later on. 

Focus What we do. 
Quickwrite Quickwrite sessions take place each day for 30 minutes. There are very clear steps to the process.
Spelling Daily spelling sessions take place. The Nelson Spelling scheme is used. 
Grammar Grammar objectives are covered explicitly before being woven into the Quickwrite sessions. 
Vocabulary Each year group has two new vocabulary words each week taken from a progressive list. Activities using these words are given and children are encouraged to use them in their Quickwrite sessions. 
Class Novel Each class has a class novel that is read to them each day for approximately 15 minutes. The class novel forms part of the Whole Class Guided Reading sessions on Monday and Friday. 
Whole Class Guided Reading

In years 2 to 6, Whole Class Guided Reading takes place each day. Questions are taken from the VIPERS approach (explained further below). There is an emphasis on high quality texts and the development of reading fluency. 

In Year 1, a mixture of daily individual reading and whole class guided reading takes place. 

EYFS focus on phonics and high frequency and tricky words from the Letters and Sounds document. 

Phonics Daily 30-minute sessions take place following the Letters and Sounds progression. These are supported by PhonicsPlay.

Puncuation and Grammar

Punctuation and grammar are the tools writers use to communicate meaning and aid the reader. At St Stephen's, we have embedded punctuation and grammar into our everyday teaching of English as well as having stand alone lessons when required.

Spelling correctly is an essential skill to become a good communicator. Children are taught through phonics in the younger years and progress to learning about spelling rules and patterns as they progress through the school.

We have invested in the Nelson spelling scheme which uses a variety of activities to embed spelling rules, enabling children to spell correctly in their written work.  Please encourage your children by exposing them to new words and helping them practise their spelling patterns.
